Despite Late Start Husticon Football Happy To Play In Fall

After winning back-to-back Trailway Large Conference championships the winds of change are blowing for the Horicon/Hustisford co-op football team.   Not only is Husticon dealing with the ever-changing landscape of high school football because of COVID-19, but they are also looking at a new conference.

Horicon/Husty’s season is staying in the fall season, but their start has been pushed back because of local coronavirus protocol.  With most team’s who chose to stay in the fall starting practice on Labor Day, Husticon will begin practice on September 21st and will play a five-game schedule beginning on October 9th.

Shannon Mueller is entering his 8th season as head coach and told that “It’s football season in the fall and we very are happy with all the hard work that went into allowing us to be able to play and hoping everything stands firm so that we can do this.  I’m super excited to see the boys again and hope to have a season.”

With realignment for football, Husticon will now competes in the Capitol Conference which includes; Big Foot, Columbus, Lake Mills, Lakeside Lutheran, Lodi, Beloit Turner, and Watertown Luther Prep.  With the short season, Husticon’s only game against a future conference foe is against Luther Prep in the opener.

If Husticon is going to continue their recent success on the gridiron, they will need to find a way to replace Trailways Small Offensive Player of the Year Dylan Schmitt at quarterback and Trailways Small Defensive Player of the Year Zach Kehl at linebacker.  Schmitt was also an named Honorable Mention All-State by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association.

On offense, Husticon returns five starters including 1st Team All-Trailways Large receiver Dylan Kuehl.  Senior offensive lineman Ayden Schwark was a 2nd team all-league pick as a junior.  On defense, the Marsh Falcons return six starters from last year’s team including Kehl was a 1st team pick at defensive back.  Junior defensive back Blake Peplinski was a 2nd team selection as a sophomore, while defensive end Nathan Spoerl also garned 2nd team honors as a sophomore in 2019.

Travis Wilson of labeled Husticon as “A Team To Watch” in his preseason Division Four high school football rankings.

Husticon will open their season on Friday, October 9th when they travel to Watertown Luther Prep.
