Dem Bill Offers Alternative to GOP-Evers Tax Relief and School Funding Deal

(MADISON) Tuesday is Spring Election Day in Wisconsin. 60 school districts will hold operational referendums, asking voters to exceed state-imposed spending limits by a total of more than $1billion.

Meanwhile, Democrats have introduced a bill in the state assembly to increase state spending on schools to 60% of costs.

“This is while the state is sitting on a ($2.5 billion) surplus,” State Rep. Andrew Hysell (D-Sun Prairie) told Daily Dodge. “It’s ridiculous that state politicians can pat themselves on the back for a surplus, while they’re starving our local communities and schools.”

Republican legislative leaders and Democratic Governor Tony Evers are negotiating their own deal on school funding and tax relief. Lawmakers are expected to meet in April in an extraordinary session to consider it.
