The city of Columbus packed the elementary school gym for the “Celebration of Champions” to honor the 2022 WIAA Division 4 State Championship football team on Monday night. The event began with highlights of the WBEV radio call of the state championship game and then school officials, local and state dignitaries all talked to the crowd about what the football team’s 23-21 win over Catholic Memorial meant to the school and community.
Coach Andy Selgrad and members of the football team also thanked the crowd and community for all of the support on the run to the gold ball.
“It just illustrates how much this community loves this football team.” Selgrad told 1430 ESPN. “It means a lot. It’s just awesome seeing this outpouring of love and gratitude from everyone and it’s the perfect way to cap off the season.”
The state championship was the third in program history. The Cardinals also won titles in 1990 and 1996.
