Columbus Fire Department Awarded Two Grants to Upgrade Gas Detection Equipment

(COLUMBUS) The Columbus Fire Department is upgrading its safety equipment thanks to two new community grants totaling more than $4,000.

The department received a $2,000 Rewarding Responders Grant from the We Energies Foundation and a $2,350 Operation Round Up Grant from the Adams-Columbia Electric Cooperative.

The funding was used to purchase new Sensit Gold G2 gas detection meters, which are now installed in the departmentโ€™s first-out engines serving both city and rural areas. The multi-gas meters can detect carbon monoxide, propane, and natural gas leaks and measure oxygen levels to help firefighters monitor potentially dangerous conditions.

โ€œThese updated meters will help us quickly locate leaks and operate safely in confined spaces,โ€ the department said in a statement. โ€œWeโ€™re grateful for the continued support from both Adams-Columbia Electric Cooperative and the We Energies Foundation.โ€

The new equipment will enhance safety for both firefighters and residents by providing faster, more accurate readings during emergency calls.
