(Columbus) A Columbus bank is helping area elderly residents learn more about the dangers and signs of a scam. Between January of 2020 and June, more than $13-million-dollars was lost nationwide due to “grandparent scams” alone. Officials with Farmers & Merchants Union Bank say they feel strongly about educating community members about scams that target consumers who want to help their loved ones. Earlier this month, bank employees Shaina Hannaman and Samantha Petrie spoke to a group at the Columbus Senior Center. During the presentation, they discussed scam basics, what to look for as well details of charity and grandparent scams. Bank officials encourages people to talk to someone if they are unsure of a situation.
