Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Starts Autism Awareness Program

(Columbia County) The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has started an Autism Awareness program. Sheriff Roger Brandner says they are the first to respond to an emergency and it is crucial for their deputies to have a working knowledge of autism, the patience required, and the tools necessary to resolve situations. He says they will be providing additional autism awareness to law enforcement during their annual training. To help get the message across one of their squad cars has been outfitted with an autism awareness design and their squads will soon be equipped with sensory go bags that will contain supplies that will be used to help calm and relax the anxiety on calls involving the autistic.
