Click It or Ticket Campaign Begins Ahead of Memorial Day Travel

(STATEWIDE) Drivers across Wisconsin can expect to see more seat belt enforcement on the roads as the State Patrol’s annual Click It or Ticket campaign gets underway ahead of the busy Memorial Day travel weekend.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of State Patrol is joining law enforcement agencies statewide in the national campaign running May 18 through May 31. The effort combines education and increased enforcement to encourage drivers and passengers to buckle up.

“With an influx of travel expected for Memorial Day weekend, the Click It or Ticket campaign is a timely reminder to motorists that wearing a seatbelt is one of the best ways to protect yourself on the road,” Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan said in a statement. “Whether it’s just a quick trip or you’re traveling across the state, always make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.”

According to preliminary state data, 7,636 crashes in Wisconsin last year involved people who were not wearing seat belts. Those crashes resulted in 145 deaths and 1,876 injuries among unbelted occupants.

State officials say seat belts remain one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries and deaths in crashes.

The campaign also coincides with Memorial Day, traditionally one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Drivers may see additional patrols on highways and local roads during the enforcement period.

Law enforcement officers can stop and cite motorists for not wearing a seat belt. Penalties are higher for drivers transporting children who are not properly restrained.
