(JEFFERSON COUNTY) A commercial poultry farm in Jefferson County is under quarantine after state officials confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, a fast-moving virus that can kill entire flocks.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said the H5N1 virus was found in a commercial flock. State and federal animal health officials are now working together to contain it.
The farm has been quarantined to stop the movement of birds and poultry products. The infected flock will be euthanized to prevent the virus from spreading. Officials said none of the birds will enter the food supply.
Health officials say the risk to the general public remains low. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and Jefferson County Public Health are monitoring farmworkers who may have been exposed for symptoms.
While bird flu mainly affects poultry, the H5N1 strain has also shown up in other animals. Last year, Wisconsin confirmed an infection in one dairy herd. That farm’s quarantine has since been lifted.
State law requires livestock owners to register their premises so officials can quickly reach them during disease outbreaks.
Farmers who notice sudden illness or higher-than-normal deaths in poultry, dairy cattle or other animals are asked to contact DATCP at 608-224-4872 during business hours or 800-943-0003 after hours.
Updates on the outbreak and resources for producers are available on the department’s website.
