(Beaver Dam) A special dedication took place at the Dodge County Fair in remembrance of a beloved 4-H leader. Dan Short is going to be remembered with an engraved bench at the south end of the Beef and Sheep Barn, of which he helped spearhead construction, after the ribbon was cut before a large crowd. Short was a Livestock and Farm Financial Analyst with UW Extension Dodge County from 1975-to-2007 and was named the 2003 Friend of 4-H.
Those speaking during the dedication spoke of Short’s ability to foster friendships and experiences while providing assistance to farmers and mentoring youth across Dodge, Jefferson, Columbia and Sauk counties. Colleague Dave Connor said most people did not realize that the money Short would make judging at county fairs would be donated back to each fair’s youth program.
Short’s family was also presented with a plaque in the Farm Progress Arena along with a close friend of his, and ours, John Moser and also Tom Stebbins. That ceremony also saw a recognition for auctioneer Julius Temkin who again this year contributed his talents to the fair. The bench was donated by the Dodge County 4-H Leaders Association and the Dodge County Meat Animal Sale Committee in conjunction with the Dodge County Fairgrounds and many other donors.
