(BEAVER DAM) People in Beaver Dam will gather Memorial Day morning to remember veterans who served the country — and those the community lost over the past year.
The annual Memorial Day ceremony is set for 10:15 a.m. Monday at Veteran’s Memorial Park inside Oakwood Cemetery near Highway 33 and Highway 151. Organizers say the service will include the reading of veterans’ names and, weather permitting, a flyover during the ceremony.
Music will be provided by the Beaver Dam High School Marching Band and the St. Katherine Drexel Marching Band. The ceremony will also include military honors and a firing squad salute.
The service will be broadcast and livestreamed through WBEV and Daily Dodge for people unable to attend in person. Organizers encourage attendees to bring lawn chairs or blankets because limited bench seating is available at the cemetery.
If weather forces a change, organizers say updates will air on WBEV between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. In that case, the ceremony would move to the Veterans Center on Beichl Avenue and begin at 10:30 a.m.
Lois Levenhagen, president of the Beaver Dam American Legion Auxiliary and chair of the Memorial Day Weekend Ceremony, said the event often becomes emotional for people attending.
“It really gets into it,” Levenhagen said. “There’s one or two moments that are really tearjerkers.”
