(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam High School Band is performing their spring concert Monday night. Band Director Kyle Henrickson says this performance will feature all three of the high school’s bands.
“We have two concert bands and then our wind ensemble…wind ensemble being our top group at the high school,” says Henrickson. “Each of the concert bands are playing two pieces. Heavier works that have taken some work for us to get together. And then one thing we’ll be doing with those concert bands that, at least in my time here…been here seven years…we haven’t done before, is putting those two concert bands together into one big band of about seventy kids and we’re doing a combined work with them.”
That work, Henrickson says is called ‘Foundry’ and utilizes the bands many percussionists.
In celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the band program, the wind ensemble commissioned a piece to pay tribute.
“The composer’s name is Dan Evans…he’s the Pardeeville [High School] band director,” says Henrickson. “We reached out to him at the beginning of the school year about this piece. It’s called ‘Sacred Springs Overture’ and wind ensemble’s been working on that for awhile now. That’s our commissioned piece to honor the history of our program. So, if you are [at the high school auditorium] on Monday you’ll get to hear a world premiere of a piece by the wind ensemble.”
Junior and Drum Major Samantha Davis is a member of the wind ensemble.
“When I play it…it almost feels like walking through a forest…almost like a beautiful forest,” says Davis. “When I play it, I get a big sense of pride.”
Davis called it a “beautiful piece.”
The Beaver Dam High School Bands spring concert will begin tonight at 7:30pm in the high school auditorium.
