(Beaver Dam) Beaver Dam School District officials say there is no credible threat associated with a “burn list” that was created and shared by high school students. Administration became aware of the list Tuesday that was posted on social media.
The term “burn list” aligns with a TikTok challenge referencing a resolution to make a list of things to let go of. The purpose is to release the negative emotions associated with the people, places, or things on the list, and then burn the list.
The high school administrative team has identified the individuals responsible for creating and distributing this list. They say they are working in close collaboration with the school resource officer and local law enforcement partners to thoroughly address the matter and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
Superintendent Mark DiStefano says the context of tragedies and violence in schools, including recent events in our own state have and should provide a grounding reminder and expectation that any and all threats or perceived threats must always be taken very seriously. He adds that any student found to be involved will face significant disciplinary action in accordance with their school policies and be referred to law enforcement. DiStefano says the safety and well- being of students and staff remains their top priority.
The district is thanking parents, families, and community members for taking an active role in speaking with their children about appropriate use of technology, including the use of social media. They add that while there are several embedded instructional components throughout a child’s educational experience, the ongoing engagements, expectations, and monitoring from home can and do contribute to better habits and outcomes for all children.
Officials with the district say as they work to resolve this issue, they remain committed to helping students finish the semester strong. They are encouraging all members of their school community to stay focused on their academic goals, while also continuing to foster a positive and respectful environment for all. Additional updates will be provided as needed.
