BDPD Remind Motoring Public Of School Zone Safety

(Beaver Dam) Local law enforcement is reminding folks of important safety tips when entering a school zone. Beaver Dam Police Lieutenant Jeremiah Johnson recapped a recent incident where a driver had entered a school and nearly injured children in a crosswalk at Washington Elementary.

“A crossing guard had her stop sign out,โ€ says Johnson. โ€œShe had two juveniles in front of her. Class had just gotten out, [the] students were going to get on the other side of North Center Street. There was a southbound car that missed all the warning signs and ended up stopping at the last minute.โ€ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย

Johnson says when the car finally stopped, both tires were in the crosswalk and if the children had been there, they probably would have been hit. He goes on to highlight what the driver failed to do.

โ€œThis driver missed [the] 15 miles per hour [sign], missed the school zone sign, missed the flashing yellow lights on top of that sign, and was continuing to go.โ€

The lieutenant says the driver additionally missed the crosswalk itself, another crosswalk sign, and the crossing guard with her stop sign that had a blinking red light on top.
