BDHS Track & Field Never Gets Out Of The Blocks

The Beaver Dam High School track teams continues to compete even though they never got to take part in a meet.  Unlike some other sports this spring, Golden Beavers got in about a week’s worth of practice before the season was suspended because of COVID-19.

Beaver Dam head track coach coach PJ Senn says that even though the season was suspended, his team has continued to be committed to getting better and staying in shape.  Through online daily workouts posted on the team’s Instagram page, Senn says that his team has continued to be engaged.  He says that his senior class has been great leaders in keeping teammates active throughout the “Safer at Home” directive.  He says team members are posting their daily workout results and using those results to compare and compete against others.

Senn also adds that it’s really hard for anyone to relate to what this year’s senior class is going through as your senior year is supposed to be the pinnacle of many people’s athletic careers.  He says that, the closest feeling to what this year’s season class is going through, might be a player whose year ends because of injury, but even that is not like the current situation.

Despite, in-school learning cancelled and the sports season suspended, Senn says that he hopes to stay in contact with his team throughout, what would have been the Spring track season.  He says his goals for this year were to build culture within the program and increase participation.  He had anticipated having between 80 and 95 members of this year’s squad.

Once health officials give the all clear to compete again, Senn says he’s going to encourage his team to get involved the various summer track programs and clubs across the state of Wisconsin.  That would possibly give his seniors a chance to compete in some capacity before moving on to post high school activities.

Senn says they continue to try and honor this year’s senior class by doing various things such as posting online videos (see below) and doing weekly senior spotlights though the rest of the season.

Coach Senn is in his 1st year at Beaver Dam High School where teaches special education.  He is an Illinois native (and yes, a Bears fan).  He was a member of the University of Dubuque track and field team where he competed in the pole vault.
