(Waupun) A seventh inmate has died at Waupun Correctional Institution. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections offender website notes that 23-year-old Damien Evans died on Tuesday at the state’s oldest prison.
The site did not provide any details about the case. Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says his agency is investigating the death and has no information to share at this time.
Evans marks the seventh Waupun prison inmate do have died in custody since June of 2023. Last June, the then-Warden Randall Hepp and several members of his staff were arrested and charged with misconduct and felony inmate abuse.
Federal investigators have also been looking into an alleged smuggling ring involving employees at the Waupun prison. Inmates have also filed a class-action lawsuit alleging mistreatment and a lack of healthcare.
