(JUNEAU) February is American Heart Month, and the Dodge County Health Department is encouraging residents to focus on everyday habits that can help prevent heart disease.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, killing about 2,200 people each day. Health officials say the encouraging news is that nearly 80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable through lifestyle choices such as staying active, eating well, not smoking, and managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
As part of the effort, Dodge County residents can borrow electronic blood pressure monitors at locations throughout the county. Those include Dodge County libraries, Dodge County Health and Human Services, the TAG Center in Mayville, the YMCA of Dodge County, and the Watermark in Beaver Dam.
Public health nurses are also reminding people that staying active during winter doesnโt have to be complicated. Simple steps like taking walks when weather allows, planning activities around forecasts, dressing in layers, doing online workouts, staying active indoors, or volunteering can support both physical and mental health.
Health officials say American Heart Month is a reminder that small, consistent choices can make a meaningful difference in heart health โ not just in February, but year-round.
