(Beaver Dam) There are several signs and signals people can look for when they suspect a loved one could be in a domestic violence situation. PAVE is a local domestic violence shelter in Beaver Dam that has been empowering those that have experienced violence since 1978, with their first shelter opening in 1990. Executive Director Emily Shier says the physical signs are the most obvious.
“Bruises or cuts that are worse than the explanations like somebody saying, ‘I accidentally fell’ or ‘I hit my head on a cabinet,’” says Shier. “If it’s something that’s happening regularly, or the story just doesn’t really add up, that would be an understanding concern for a loved one.”
Shier says a potential victim might wear clothing that they normally would not wear, such as a turtleneck or sunglasses indoors. She adds the more important signs to watch out for are the emotional.
“So, some of the emotional signs are being unusually quiet, especially if you have someone that is typically a boisterous, outgoing, extroverted person especially around the holidays and now they’re withdrawn or even fearful acting,” Shier says.
She says other signs include a change or increase in anxiety level, a sudden addiction to drugs or alcohol and depression or discussion of suicidal thoughts.
