Dry Conditions Could Lead To Heightened Wildfire Risks

(Dodge County) Spring is wildfire season in Wisconsin, and it’s important to know fire conditions and burning permit restrictions in your area. Department of Natural Resources Wildfire Prevention Specialist Catherine Koele says burning in the evening is best.

“The winds tend to die down…the humidity comes up…there’s more moisture in the air and it’s less of a chance for fires to escape,” says Koele. “So, when the DNR does allow burning with a burn permit, it’s typically going to be in the evening.”

With a dry forecast on tap this week, Koele suggests property owners delay any burning.

“Really important to check that fire danger…obtain proper burning permits…or really just in this dry stretch, avoid burning period until things really green up,” says Koele.

According to the DNR’s fire danger website, Dodge County currently has low fire danger as of Tuesday afternoon. Fond du Lac County is in the moderate category. The DNR has already responded to 600 wildfires this year.
