Columbus Fire Department Trains For Firefighter Rescue Scenarios

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Fire Department is highlighting recent training aimed at helping firefighters rescue one another during emergencies.

According to the City of Columbus, the departmentโ€™s June 16 Tuesday Drill Night focused on Rapid Intervention Team operations. The city says a Rapid Intervention Team, or RIT, is a dedicated crew of firefighters assigned to rescue firefighters who become trapped, injured, lost, or incapacitated inside a burning structure.

Firefighters practiced two rescue scenarios during the drill. One involved a below-grade rescue using a hose line. The other involved a second-story rescue of an unconscious firefighter.

The city says the drill was led by Captain Retzlaff, Firefighter Kraemer, and Firefighter Crave. The city also noted the training was made possible through support from the Scott and Anita Sharpee family.
