Woman Charged with Stealing a Safe Pleads ‘Not Guilty”

A Fond du Lac woman accused of stealing a safe filled with silver bars and coins entered a “not guilty” plea at arraignment yesterday in Dodge County court. 22-year-old Steffany Barton is charged with felony Burglary. According to the criminal complaint, she and her boyfriend – 23-year-old Tyler Peschke of Fond du Lac – showed up at a friend’s house in Lomira in April; Peschke distracted the victim outside while Barton retrieved the safe from a closet. Afterward, Barton reportedly said she received an emergency call from her mom and they had to leave. The victim found that suspicious because Barton does not own a cell phone. No other valuables in plain site were stolen leading investigators to believe the perpetrators knew the victims. A friend of all three later told police about the caper because he was disgusted Barton and Peschke would betray their friends. The value of the safe and its contents is estimated at close to $9000. The pair was reportedly planning on selling the stolen silver for heroin. Peschke is charged with Burglary as a Party to a Crime and waived his right to a preliminary hearing last week. Both face a maximum sentence of over twelve years in prison, if convicted
