Wisconsin Grand Jury Indicts Connecticut Man With Wire Fraud

(Columbia County) A federal grand jury in Madison recently indicted a Connecticut man charging him with conspiring to commit wire fraud. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul was among those announcing the indictment against 26-year-old Matthew Ramos-Soto of Hartford Connecticut.

The indictment alleges that from October 24th to October 28th of 2022, unknown conspirators contacted elderly individuals by telephone and falsely represented that a relative had been arrested following an incident and that money for bail was needed. The indictment further alleges that Ramos-Soto and his co-conspirators traveled throughout Wisconsin to pick up cash in person from the targeted individuals.

The indictment alleges that Ramos-Soto and his co-conspirators obtained approximately $200,000 during the five days of the conspiracy in October 2022.  The investigation began with a Statewide Crime Alert issued by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department and involved federal and state agencies, and police departments including the Fond du Lac and Oshkosh Police Departments.
