(Wisconsin) Wintery weather is resulting slippery roadways throughout the region, with an 85-vehicle pileup ushering in the weekend Friday afternoon. It unfolded around 12:30pm on Interstate 39/90 between Janesville and Beloit in Rock County. Authorities reported 21 people sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. Snow, ice and whiteout conditions were said to be factors in the crash.
In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the State Patrol said troopers arrived to find the interstate blocked in both directions. Traffic was diverted onto side roads and all lanes were open by 9:45pm Friday.
A few counties north along the interstate in Juneau County, the Wisconsin State Patrol reported a trooper injury. The incident occurred Saturday morning on I90/94 near Wisconsin Dells. The trooper was responding to an unrelated crash when the driver of a pickup truck lost control approaching the crash scene and slid sideways into the troopers squad car before rolling into the median ditch.
The trooper was taken to a hospital for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries; the squad contained significant damage. The driver of the pickup was not injured.
