WIAA STATE GYMNASTICS QUALIFYING & FORMAT REVISED

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association revised the number of teams and individuals qualifying for the 2021 State Gymnastics Team and Individual Championships and the format of the State meet in accordance with guidelines to mitigate COVID-19 exposure.

The number of sectionals have been reduced from five in a typical year to four this year. The top two teams from each of the sectionals qualify for the State Team Championships for a total of eight teams in both Divisions 1 and 2. The top five individual gymnasts in each event and the all-around at sectionals, regardless if they are a member of a qualifying team, qualify in their individual events at State.

The Division 1 State Team and Individual Championships will be held at Wisconsin Rapids High School Saturday, Feb. 27. The Division 2 championships will be hosted by Onalaska High School at Performance Elite Gymnastics in La Crosse Saturday, Feb. 27. Competition in both divisions is scheduled to begin at noon.

The revised State championships schedule is condensed into one day with two sessions for the individual and team competitions in both divisions. The meets maintain the same 10-team rotation format with individual qualifiers placed in the open rotation positions created by the reduction of two qualifying teams.

The 2021 tournament assignments for each division can be accessed on the gymnastics tournament page on the WIAA website. There are 78 teams competing in the Tournament Series this year, including 38 teams in Division 1 and 40 in Division 2. The sectionals are scheduled Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 18-20.
