(Mayville) A weeklong jury trial began Monday for a man charged in connection to a stabbing in the city of Mayville three years ago. Hensy Gabriel Cortez-Hernandez of Mayville is facing felony counts of Attempted First-Degree Intentional Homicide and Intimidate a Witness.
The Mayville Police Department responded to the 100 block of Allen Street around 3am on December 15th of 2019. Officers found Salvador Meza-Gonzalez of Mayville with cuts to his head, neck, and hands. Meza-Gonzalez told reportedly authorities that he met his attacker at a local tavern earlier that evening.
Cortez-Hernandez was found hiding in a freezer in the basement of his Mayville residence around 11:20am the same day and was taken into custody. Mayville police were able to develop suspect information with assistance from neighboring agencies and the state crime lab.
The 36-year-old faces a life sentence, if convicted.
