The Wayland Academy boys soccer team opens their 2021 alternate fall season schedule this afternoon as they travel to Ripon.
Veteran Wayland coach PJ Osvald enters year #1 as the Big Red’s soccer program. He has spent time as an assistant with the program and also had one season as the girls head coach. Coach Osvald tells DailyDodge.com that this year’s version of The Big Red has players from around ten different countries besides the United States. “It’s the word’s game, soccer, abd everybody plays it a bit differently but they really do bond over it. Whether they play a little FIFA on their game system or knock it around outside on the weekend. Soccer is a real meeting ground for a lot of our guys.”
Wayland has nine seniors on this year’s roster, many of which have been a part of the team’s recent success. In 2019, Wayland was 8-9-1 but still won the Regional Championship. They also captured back to back Wisconsin Flyway Conference championships in 2017 & 2018.
This season The Big Red return a pair of players who earned all conference recognition in the fall of 2019. Senior Jason Mndolwa was a 2nd team All-Flyway pick while sophomore Emre Kocer garnered Honorable Mention honors as a freshman.
The Big Red’s opener at Ripon starts at 4:30pm this afternoon.
