(Beaver Dam) Wayland Academy has announced it’s 19th annual competition for the Mary Swan Scholarship. The award covers the cost of the full cost of tuition at Wayland for four years. The coeducational college preparatory school offers the scholarship opportunity to incoming ninth grade day students who are full time residents of Beaver Dam. Established in 2004, the Swan Scholarship is a renewable four-year scholarship named for Miss Mary Swan, a 1925 graduate of Wayland Academy, who passed away in 2003. Swan taught English at the academy from 1956 to 1969 and was known for her steadfast devotion to teaching students to write clearly and concisely. Swan Trustee, Wayland Trustee, and life-long friend of Mary Swan, John B. McKinstry said she was (quote) “determined to use her intellectual resources as a teacher as well as her material resources to open doors to that end.”
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must reside full-time with at least one parent within the boundaries of the Beaver Dam Unified School District. Students can be enrolled in public school, parochial school, or be home schooled. Applicants must be entering ninth grade as of the fall of 2022 and be in good academic and disciplinary standing at their current school. Those seeking more information or an application for the Mary Swan Scholarship can reach out to Wayland Academy at 920-356-2120 or visit them online at wayland.org.
