Waupun’s Roecker Heading To State Gymnastics Meet

Freshman Abby Roecker laid it all on the table Friday night at the Division 2 Sectional in Whitefish Bay to clinch four State Tournament berths. The top five individuals in each event (including All Around) as well as the top two teams advance to the State Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids next weekend.

Extending an already outstanding season, Roecker tied the school Vault record with a 9.1, good enough to tie for 2nd place. Her 8.95 on Beam earned her a tie for 4th, 9.425 on Floor was good enough for 2nd, and her 35.875 All Around total earned 4th.

“Abby was primed to go tonight, and it was so exciting to watch her go 4 for 4. Her composure under pressure and confident attitude is the perfect mix, and to achieve what she has so far as a freshman is outstanding. Her whole team and us as coaches could not be more happy for or proud of her. She absolutely deserves this.” Waupun head coach Emily Engelhardt said.

Roecker already broke one other school record this season on Floor with a 9.55. That record was previously held by Isabella Doege (9.475 in the 2019-2020 season), and Roecker was just .2 shy of the 22 year old All Around record of 36.05 held by then foreign exchange student Helene Pequin.

“We know she has the talent, and we hope this is just the start of many more big things for her. We also knew this Sectional was going to be super tough, there were so many talented girls and teams here. It’s for sure the toughest I’ve ever seen it in my 20 years in the sport. But she focused on her own performances and didn’t watch anyone else. She gave it 110%, and it paid off. Now comes the fun part!” Engelhardt said.

The rest of the Warrior team also gave it their all, ending their season with a team total of 128.0, 5th out of the 9 teams.

“I can’t say enough how proud I am of all these ladies. This is a long season, with a difficult sport. We went out there tonight with the goal of having fun, and we did.” Engelhardt added.  “We’re still a fairly young team (4 freshman, 1 sophomore and 2 juniors), and we as coaches know their potential. We’re excited to see what big things this team will do in the future.”
