Waupun’s Emily Walters Taking Loss Of Senior Season In Stride

The suspension of the Spring sports season has been a tough pill to swallow for all high school athletes across the nation. It’s been especially hard for the 2020 senior class who won’t get to experience their final season of high school competition as they had planned.

Emily Walters is a third baseman for the Waupun High School softball team is one of the players who’s senior campaign was cut short because of COVID-19.  Walters tells DailyDodge.com that when the announcement was first made that the season would not start as planned, she was shocked because softball has been a big part of her life and her heart shattered.   She says that as the days have passed, she has accepted what is going on and she will make the most out of whatever happens because of the pandemic.  Walters added when you watch things like the coronavirus on the news, you don’t really think about it having an impact on a small town like Waupun.

The Waupun softball team was gearing up for another great season before the spring sports seasons were shut down.  The Warriors are the defending East Central Conference champions and had won two of the last three league titles.   Waupun has also won the Regional championship the last two seasons.

The Warriors were returning four All-East Central Conference players this season.  Junior infielder Kayla Rote was a 1st team all-conference pick.  Fellow junior infielder Haley Huenink was a 2nd team choice.  Walters was an Honorable Mention pick last year as was junior outfielder Makenya Potratz.

Along with Walters, Amber Sperger and Elizabeth Hayes have had their season year’s cut short.

Walters plans on continuing her softball career in college at Concordia University, Wisconsin in Mequon.  She says she will study either secondary education with a minor in Spanish or communication disorders with hopes of become a speech language pathologist.

With the “Safer at Home” orders by Governor Evers extended until May 26th and homeschooling extended through the rest of the year, the WIAA Board of Control will discuss the membership’s options for the remainder of the spring sports seasons and for summertime regulations at its scheduled meeting on April 21 via video conferencing.
