Waupun’s Doege Shines At State Meet

Waupun Senior Isabella “Izzy” Doege had a great Saturday at the WIAA State Gymnastics Meet in Wisconsin Rapids.  Doege improved her State finishes from last year with 2 medals this year; T4th on bars (8.733) and 6th All Around (35.767 – PR).  As a team, Waupun finished 8th in the Division Two team competition on Friday.

Head Coach Emily Engelhardt provided here perspective on Doege’s day to DailyDodge.com…..

“She was the very first competitor on beam to start the day and had a super solid routine, with only 1 large bobble to score a near season high 9.067 (9th).  Starting on beam, and especially being first can be a daunting task, but I think she was more prepared after the team competition Friday. Going first helped her set the bar for the rest of the day, Once she nailed beam, we knew the toughest part of the day was behind us, and she could relax a bit more and really focus on details – sticking landings and really executing all her skills the best she could. Buoyed by a great start on beam, she went to Floor in a great mood, and once again nailed her routine with the exception of 1 little hiccup in her front tumbling pass. She scored a 9.267, tying for 8th. She stuck all her tumbling passes, and overall had a great routine, just missing out on the podium. Vault was solid also, scoring an 8.7. Bars was our last event, and she was the last competitor of the D2 competition. I thought that was fitting, as bars is her favorite, and to finish her career on her favorite event after a great day was the cherry on top. One judge told her it was the best routine she had seen her do.  As a coach I couldn’t be more proud of her and all our girls, they gave it their all this weekend.  And just like the other Seniors on Friday, the tears started even before she stuck her final dismount. Jane and I gave her huge hugs and as she took off her grips one last time, and as we let the moment sink in, I told her it’s been a great ride.”
