Waupun Gymnastics 5th At West Bend

The Waupun High School Warrior gymnastics team finished 5th out of 8 at the West Bend West Invitational Saturday with their highest team total of the season, 123.925. Hartford Union took 1st with a 135.825.

“We’re excited to be back competing like normal again- we had a busy December (5 meets), and a pretty young team again this year (6 freshman, 2 Sophomores and 3 Juniors), but already Coach Nicole (Crescio) and I have seen an immense amount of progress. That’s what’s nice about competitions, it puts your feet to the fire a bit.”  said head coach Emily Engelhardt

The Warriors started strong Round 1 on Beam, posting their highest team total on the event of the season. Freshman Abby Roecker placed 2nd with a 8.925, and Junior Nicole Roecker placed 8th with a 8.45.

On Floor, Abby Roecker took 1st with a near-school record 9.45, on Vault took 4th with an 8.7, and was 2nd All Around with a 35.175.

“Abby has been having a great start to her freshman year- she’s driven and tough minded, making her a strong competitor. We’re excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds.” Engelhardt said.

“We know we have a super talented team this season with the return of Junior letter winners Nicole Roecker and Maddy Falke, and Sophomores Grayce VandeBerg & Kearsten Sytsma. We also have 3 other talented Freshman who have been vying for many Varsity spots; Sophia Neary, Ava Koerner, and Stella Harmsen. This depth has already proved to be a huge asset as a few girls are working their way back from some pre-season ankle injuries. Nicole (Roecker) has been a top Varsity All Around since her freshman year, but has only been competing 2 events so far this season, and today was Freshman Sophia Neary’s first Varsity All Around competition. We’re hoping to have everyone healthy and at their full strength soon.”

In JV action, the Warriors took 6th as a team despite competing short handed, posting a respectable 68.825. Junior Aliayah Bender placed 4th All Around.

“The girls were so excited for Aliayah, she works so hard in practice and has come SO far since she came out her freshman year!”

The Warriors get a couple weeks off before returning to action on January 4th hosting their JV invite, then travel to Markesan for a dual on the 6th.
