(Waupun) The Waupun Fire Department is looking for anyone interested in becoming a paid on-call firefighter or paid on-call emergency medical responder. Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director B.J. DeMaa says that this need does not only exist in the city.
“This is a need that exists in the majority of your communities out there right now in that there is a number of different influences out there that, you know, we’re maybe not seeing folks turn out in the same numbers as we did in the past,” says DeMaa.
DeMaa says that people live very busy lives and that the job is a big commitment. He adds that he does not want to lose sight of that.
“For folks that do this, you know, in a volunteer capacity, there’s a lot of training that goes in,” DeMaa says. “Not only through the tech schools, but through your local fire department as well, whether that’s weekly or monthly. But, yeah, there’s also the responding to calls.”
The fire chief says it takes a special individual to do this type of work.
