Waupun Boys Hockey One Win From State

The Waupun boys hockey team (18-6-2) is gearing up for Friday night’s WIAA Division 2 Sectional Final against St. Mary’s Springs at the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac.  The Ledgers are currently ranked #1 in the WisconsinPrepHockey.net Division 2 Poll while Waupun is #4.

The Warriors have ripped off six straight wins heading into Friday’s matchup, including a pair of playoff wins.  Waupun blanked Stoughton 10-0 in their playoff opener then edged Badger North champ Waunakee 4-3 in overtime this past Monday night.   Waupun finished 4th in the Badgerland Conference.  Jarrett Buchholz leads the Warriors in scoring with 72 points (29G, 43A).  Malachi Buchholz is right behind him with 68 points (45G, 23A).  Malachi’s 44 goals is 2nd in the state and his 68 total points is tied for 8th most in the state.  Jarrett’s 70 points is 6th most in the state of Wisconsin.

St. Mary’s Springs Academy (21-3-2) won the Badgerland Conference this season then picked up a pair of postseason shutouts.  SMSA blanked Monona Grove 10-0, then shut down Oregon 6-0 to punch their ticket to the Sectional Final.  Brady Welsch leads the Ledgers in scoring with 74 points (33G, 41A) while Noah Pickart comes into the game with 51 (18G, 33A).

The teams played to a 1-1 draw back on January 23rd.

The winner advances to the WIAA Division Two State Hockey Tournament in Madison next week.  Waupun’s last trip to state was in 1990 while St. Mary’s Springs qualified in 2018.

The puck drops at 5:30pm at the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac.
