The Waterloo High School football team heads into 2021 looking to build off of a 2020 fall season that saw them finish 3rd in the Eastern Suburban Conference Standings and earn a post-season bid. In 2020, Waterloo was able to compete their fall season, going 3-2 in the Eastern Suburban Conference and 3-3 overall.
With a smaller freshman class, this year’s version of the Pirates has a roster of just over 30 players but they bring back a talented group of veteran players led by All-Eastern Suburban running back, linebacker and punter Eugene Wolff. The powerful back averaged around 150 yards per game last fall.
“He’s a special football player.” Pirates head coach Dave Frisell told DailyDodge.com. “He just absolutely loves the game. He’s a great leader. He’s a great mentor to our young kids and if you thought he ran the ball hard last year, I think you’ll be in for a treat this year. He’s added about 10 pounds of great weight. He’s extremely well put together. He’s just hungry. He loves the contact. He loves all aspects of football and I think he’s going to have a special senior season.”
Other returning all-league players are Maximos Besl (OL & DL) and defensive end Luke Fiedorowicz.
One of the keys to the Pirates having a great 2021 campaign may be the production of a strong sophomore class.
“We’re going to really rely on that strong sophomore class.” Frisell said. ““Those kids are going to have to continue to mature and understand what varsity football is all about, as the year goes on. If those kids can gradually improve and adjust to the speed of the game as comparted to the JV game they played last year, I think we could be pretty special. “
The Pirates open up their 2021 season on Friday, August 20th at Pecatonia
