(Richfield) Washington County authorities arrested a Hubertus man on trespassing charges Monday morning. Sheriff’s officials received a call just before 4:30am from a homeowner who woke up and heard the sounds of feet shuffling a floor below him.
The caller said he was on the second floor of the house with his wife, his 8-year-old child, and had armed himself with a knife to protect his family. Responding deputies set up a perimeter and observed someone on the main floor in the kitchen area.
Law enforcement immediately made entry and observed the suspect moving towards the upstairs stairway. The 39-year-old man was arrested without incident and was taken to the Washington County Jail.
The investigation revealed the suspect was not known to the homeowner and had entered the residence through an unlocked garage door. Authorities say it was also determined that mental health issues may have been a contributing factor in the incident.
