Two New Members Bolster Watertown School Board’s Conservative Majority

(WATERTOWN) There are two new members of the Watertown School Board. The board has had to fill five vacancies this year to replace former members who quit in protest. Since the last election, the board has passed new policies curbing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts and transgender studentsโ€™ rights.

โ€œThey donโ€™t seem to be listening to other people. Theyโ€™ve decided they have on fairly particular, conservative path that they want to go down,โ€ said Barb Weiss, a retired school district employee who spoke to TMJ4.

School board critics packed the meeting room again Monday night, as they have at recent meetings, but there were also some supporters.

โ€œVote for policies that not only remove DEI and CRT (Critical Race Theory) from all statements at our schools, but remove permanently all indoctrination,โ€ said a woman who only gave her first name, Diane, when she testified to the board Monday.

The board appointed two new members, longtime educator David Handyside and social worker Linda Oberbrunner.
