Two Motorists, Including Beaver Dam Man, Get OWIs In Head-On Collision

(Beaver Dam) A two vehicle crash in Columbia County lead to the arrest of two people, one from Beaver Dam the other from Madison, for OWI over the weekend. Around 2:20am Saturday, dispatch received a report of the accident near the intersection of Highway 16 and Dunning Road in the Township of Pacific. The caller told dispatch that the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene on foot into a wooded area nearby. Once on scene, law enforcement began a K9 track for the driver who was located a short time later and was taken into custody. He was identified as 59-year-old Joseph Gay of Madison. Sheriff Roger Brandner says after questioning, Gay was arrested and charged with OWI Sixth Offense, felony Bail Jumping and Hit and Run. The crash investigation revealed that Gay had been traveling west bound on Highway 16 and crossed the centerline, striking the other vehicle. Brandner says no one was injured but it was determined that the operator of the second vehicle, 28-year-old James Wilkens of Beaver Dam, was consuming alcohol that evening. He says Wilkens was placed through field sobriety tests and was charged with OWI First Offense. Gay is awaiting his initial appearance at the Columbia County Jail while Wilkens was released to a sober responsible party.
