11/28/17 – The city of Mayville is looking to fill two positions created by the pending retirement of one long-time city department head. Mike Kurutz announced earlier this year that he would soon be leaving his job as Director of Parks, Recreation, and Public Works. During his tenure, Kurutz was tasked with supervising the TAG Center and overseeing aquatic operations in addition to his existing duties as Director of Parks. With the departure, his responsibilities were split into two full-time positions: Parks Director and Director of Recreation and Aquatics. Kurutz, who has been with the city for roughly 31 years, says he had no problem doing both tasks but says there are some very busy times throughout the year. He says the city has a lot of money invested in parks and they need to be managed properly which can cause an uptick in man hours during the warmer months. The city’s joint Personal and Finance Committee Monday night set job parameters and pay scales. The Parks Director annual salary will range between $53-thousand dollars to $54-thousand dollars while the Director of Recreation and Aquatics salary will range between $52-thousand dollars and $58-thousand dollars a year. Both will be dependent upon experience and the salaries will not affect city taxes. The creation of the new position is expected to be budget neutral after job responsibilities are reorganized. The city plans to look internally first to fill the Parks Director job but if no one applies it will be posted publicly. Alderman Bob Smith says the city is looking for a Recreation and Aquatics Director and ideally will hire someone can operate a pool program, a physical education program, or have some experience operating a YMCA. The deadline to apply for Director of Recreation and Aquatics is January 5th. Submissions can be made through the clerk’s office and online applications are accepted. Kurutz last day is May 1st.
