Texas Woman Gets Prison For Assaulting Beaver Dam Boy

(Beaver Dam) A Texas woman was sentenced Thursday to two years in prison for having inappropriate contact with a minor from Beaver Dam. Baylei Smotherman was convicted in March on one felony count of Sexual Assault of a Child Under 16 Years of Age.

Beaver Dam police were dispatched to the AmericInn last June following a report that an underage person was meeting up with someone from out of state. The story unraveled after the victim’s brother informed his parents of the missing teen when he did not show up for summer school. When authorities entered the hotel room they found Smotherman and the 16-year-old boy. Upon further inspection, police found empty beer bottles and two champagne glasses near a hot tub.

According to the criminal complaint, Smotherman met the victim while the two were playing the video game Fortnite. The pair continued to message each other on Facebook and the 30-year-old sent a nude photo of herself. The victim told police that Smotherman flew from Texas to Madison and then caught a ride to Beaver Dam so the two could meet up. She told investigators that she thought the boy was 19-years-old but then later admitted to knowing he was underage and also admitted having sexual contact.

Smotherman was given nearly a year of pre-sentence credit so she’ll only spend another year behind bars but that will be followed by eight years of extended supervision.
