State Senator Luther Olsen Retiring

(Oshkosh) State Senator Luther Olsen is retiring after 26 years in the state legislature the last 16 years representing the 14th State Senate District. Olsen announced Monday he will not be seeking reelection. The Republican from Ripon spent ten years representing the 41st State Assembly District prior to his election to the Senate in 2004 and also served on the Berlin School Board for 21 years the last nine as president. That interest in education served him well. He chaired both Education Committees in the Assembly and Senate during his time there and is vice-chair of the Joint Finance Committee. Olsen says he’s proud of authoring the state’s Graduated Driver’s License law but feels the best thing he did was working with constituents on their issues.

“Probably the thing that makes me most proud is being able to do the constituent work helping citizens of my Assembly seat and Senate seat with issues that they have dealt with.”

He mentioned for example helping a lady that needed a transplant when she was having an issue with insurance coverage. He’s looking forward to spending more time with his wife Joan, family, and watching his grandchildren grow up. Several Democrats have already announced runs for the Senate seat and Olsen says State Representative Joan Ballweg, a Republican from Markesan, has expressed interest in it as well.
