SSM Health President Discuss CDC’s COVID Community Levels

(Waupun) The president of SSM Health’s Waupun Memorial Hospital says the CDC’s COVID community levels for counties use different standards than health care providers to gauge the virus. DeAnn Thurmer says currently Dodge, Green Lake, and Fond du Lac counties all have low community levels, but transmission rates for the coronavirus in those three counties are still high.

She notes that the community levels are based more on the overall health risk to a person. Thurmer says they are not seeing as many hospitalizations or need for treatment in intensive care units. According to the CDC, Washington and Columbia counties have medium community levels of COVID.

So far, 52.9-percent of Dodge County residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine while 50.8-percent have completed the vaccination series. Just over 28-percent have received an additional booster dose.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin is seeing a slight dip in coronavirus hospitalizations. There are 463 people in the hospital in Wisconsin with COVID. That’s the latest number from the Wisconsin Hospital Association. Seventy-seven of them are in intensive care.

Coronavirus hospitalization numbers spiked a bit in recent weeks, but have returned to about the same level as last spring.
