Six Homes And A Dialysis Center In Waupun Evacuated Due To Gas Leak

(Waupun) Several homes and a dialysis center in Waupun needed to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to a natural gas leak. The Waupun Fire Department was called to 10 Beaver Dam Street around 2:11pm for a gas line that was struck by a piece of construction equipment.

Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says occupants within the Waupun Dialysis Center were in the process of being evacuated and were relocated to the hospital. He says unsafe gas levels were detected east of the facility, so fire crews evacuated six additional homes along Beaver Dam Street.

Alliant Energy was able to control the leak within 40 minutes. DeMaa says after an hour, all operations at the hospital had resumed to normal. He says crews spent an additional 30 minutes ventilating gas from the dialysis center before that building was cleared for staff to return.

There were no injuries reported during the incident.
