Shirley Johnson (Buechner), 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 24, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Madison after severe complications following heart surgery.
Shirley had requested that there be no formal funeral services.
Shirley was born in Sheboygan, WI, March 16, 1942 to Norman and Italia Buechner. Shortly after, her family moved to Sturgeon Bay, where she grew up. Shirley graduated from the Sturgeon Bay High School in 1960, where she met her future husband, James A. Johnson, whom she married October 7, 1961 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay.
Her husband Jim was an active-duty Airman and she started her married life in Mississippi and Florida and after 8 years, back to Madison, eventually settling in Beaver Dam.
Shirley loved camping, hiking, and travelling with her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors. She also was amazing with decorating her home and making it beautiful for every season and holiday. Shirley loved caring for the little kids and babies at Rainbow Connection daycare. She enjoyed the cooking and renovation shows on tv, and was very fond of all of the many cats who have shared her life through the years.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Jim of Beaver Dam; children, Scott (Angel) Johnson of Beaver Dam, Mike Johnson of Beaver Dam, Jenny (David) Dieterich of West Bend, and Mark Johnson (Kari Witt) of Fort Atkinson; grandchildren, Bree Johnson, Melissa, Nicole, and Zack Johnson, and Jessica (Dan) Peters; brother and sister, David Buechner and Joan Jeanquart, both of Sturgeon Bay; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a nephew, Todd Jeanquart; sister-in-law, Yvonne Grapsas; and brother-in-law, Dale “Jinx” Jeanquart.
Memorials may be made in Shirley Johnson’s name to the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin.
