(WASHINGTON COUNTY) Washington County authorities are warning residents of scammers impersonating the sheriff. A citizen reported getting a phone call from someone identifying themselves as Sheriff Martin Schulties who says there are fraudulent documents in Michigan that require their immediate attention.
The scam ultimately fell apart when the citizen asked the caller for the sheriff’s badge number, and they provided a fake five-digit code. The citizen caught the red flags and hung up.
Authorities say law enforcement will never call demanding immediate action or personal information. They also recommend if you get a suspicious phone call to hang up and call the agency directly using a trusted number.
