The Rio High School girls volleyball team is off to solid start this season. The Vikings jumped out to a 6-0 start before dropping a pair of matches to Central Wisconsin Christian and Johnson Creek on Tuesday night.
Head coach JC Madorin tells DailyDodge.com that he likes the direction is program is moving. “For me it’s the fourth year in the program so the seniors I have this year, I only have two (Adeline Hutzler & Courtney Quist), have kind of help build what we are looking for in our program. And at this point it’s kind of coming to a head and we are battling. We knew we were capable of what we were doing and we came out and are playing good volleyball to start the season”
The Vikings are a junior heavy squad with six on the twelve-player roster. Coach Madorin says that girls in that group are all stepping into their roles after a learning year last season. Madorin adds says that his one sophomore and freshman classes have also stepped up and contributed to his team this year.
Madorin says that when he took over four years ago, he really wanted to build a pride in what the team was doing. His goal was to build a system focusing on a process of getting better every day, because if you build that process correctly the numbers in the game tend to workout themselves.
If you come out and watch Rio girls volleyball, coach Madorin says he preaches consistency. On offense he wants solid group of servers at all six spots in the rotation. He adds that giving hitters their best opportunities and being aggressive in everything they do are also program priorities. On defense he expects the Vikings to be scrappy, consistent, be calm in their moves and make plays.
Senior Adeline Hutzler was named All-Trailways West as a junior while sophomore Emily Loging got an Honorable Mention all-league nod as a freshman.
The Vikings will be tested tonight when they travel to Randolph. The first serve is set for 7:30pm
