(Juneau) Juneau Mayor Dan Wegener has tabbed a replacement for the vacancy created in Ward Three by the unexpected passing of Clarence “Butch” Chase. John Schuster would serve through the spring of next year. Chase himself was recently appointed to the Ward Three seat, though Schuster expressed interest in the vacancy after Chase was selected. The mayor says at that time, he and Chase discussed Schuster. Wegener says Chase told him that if anything ever happened to him, he would want Schuster to take his place on the council. Schuster was unable to attend last (Tuesday) night’s meeting but is expected to be sworn-in during or prior to next month’s meeting.
The Juneau Common Council Tuesday night did approve the appointment of an alderman in Ward One. Common Council President Jason Buske moved out of the city, creating the vacancy. Paul Shanks was sworn-in to fill out the remainder of Buske’s term, which runs through April of 2021. Shanks moved to Wisconsin from Michigan in 2015 and has three children. Cheryl Braun was unanimously elected by her peers to replace Buske in serving as council president.
