Randolph Man Facing Tax Fraud Charges

(Randolph) A Randolph man has been charged in Dane County court with filing false income taxes following an investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue’s Office of Criminal Investigation. Matthew Schraufnagel is facing four felony charges of Rendering Income Tax Return or Obtain Refund with Fraudulent Intent. Prosecutors say Schraufnagel filed false income tax returns from 2013 through 2016. The 47-year-old allegedly inflated his Wisconsin withholding during that time and understated his wages for two of the four years. That resulted in Schraufnagel allegedly receiving over $4,000 dollars more in refunds than he was entitled to. If convicted, Schraufnagel is facing up to 24 years in prison. An initial appearance is scheduled for January 29.
