(Portage) The Portage Fire Department recently recognized several of their agencies finest. The department handed out several awards including Officer of the Year which went to Matthew Gavinski. Fire Chief Troy Haase says over the course of 2021, Gavinski has supported the department’s mission and values as well as demonstrated his exemplary performance in the field. Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Ryan Armson for his work with the Portage Community School District, Health and Human Services, and the Legal system to implement a Youth Fire Intervention Program. Haase says Armson is professional and always remembers to represent the department in a positive light in public. Two Years of Service awards were handed out, one to Firefighter Tom Colen and the other to Administrative Assistant Chris Essex in recognition of their over 60 combined years at the Portage Fire Department. The department also had 11 members receive Response Commendation awards for responding to 40-percent or more of calls for service.
