Van Hollen Responds To High Courts Voter ID Decision

10/10/14 – Hang onto your photo I-D.  Wisconsin’s attorney general will still try to make you show it at the polls on November fourth, even though the U-S Supreme Court blocked the law’s enforcement Thursday night on a 6-to-3 vote.  The justices acted on an emergency request from the A-C-L-U and the Advancement Project — both of which said there was not enough time to properly put the I-D law back in place for an election that’s now just 25 days away.  A federal appeals court ruled last month that Wisconsin could re-impose its 2011 voter I-D law for November — and on Monday, the same court found the law constitutional. State Attorney General J-B Van Hollen says he’ll look for ways to address the Supreme Court’s concerns, and still require voters to show I-D at the polls next month. The Republican Van Hollen said there’s nothing in last night’s order which said the law is unconstitutional.

The six-justice majority did not say why it temporarily struck down the law.  Dissenters Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito said the appeals court rulings could not be tossed aside unless those judges had made a mistake.  The dissenters did say they were troubled that 11-thousand absentee ballots were distributed without the I-D requirement.  Officials scrambled to get those voters to produce I-D’s.  And the state began an ad campaign to show voters what they must do, and what types of I-D’s would be allowed.  The A-C-L-U’s Larry Dupuis said his group was relieved that there won’t be what he called “the mess we would have had” at the polls had the law suddenly taken effect.  Just hours after the Supreme Court’s dramatic action, a federal judge in Texas struck down that state’s voter I-D law.

First Gubernatorial Debate Is Tonight

10/10/14 – Wisconsin’s few undecided voters could get some help tonight in deciding which candidate for governor to choose.  Republican Scott Walker and his Democratic challenger Mary Burke will hold the first of their two scheduled debates.  It begins at seven p-m on public T-V, C-SPAN, and many local broadcast stations.  The debate will be re-broadcast on AM1430 WBEV immediately following Badgers football Saturday afternoon. The debate will originate from Eau Claire.  A panel of broadcast journalists will ask the questions.  Walker plans to explain his vision for a second four-year term.  Burke says she wants to reach voters who still haven’t heard from her, and tell how her agenda contrasts with Walker’s and the G-O-P’s.  It will be Burke’s first statewide political debate.  Walker has had several since being in public office since 1993.  So far, their campaigns have focused on appealing to their party bases, and convincing as many of their people as possible to go to the polls.  The latest Marquette poll shows that only three-percent of Wisconsin voters are undecided.  They might want to do some homework before tonight’s debate, especially on job numbers and the state’s employment rankings.  Both candidates have highlighted different segments of vast employment data to support their stands — Walker’s creation of 100-thousand private sector jobs, and Burke’s claim that Wisconsin is dead last in the Midwest in new jobs.  Their second-and-final debate is a week from tonight in Milwaukee.

Stakeholders Assemble At Beaver Dam Heroin Summit

10/10/14 – Several topics were covered Thursday night at the heroin summit in Beaver Dam. Among those were recovery and prevention. One local organization has a goal to bring a face and a voice to substance abuse prevention and recovery. Wisconsin Street Team Coordinator for Rise Together Nadine Machkovech explains Rise Together is an organization that goes out and advocates for heroin prevention. They also raise awareness and bring motivation to kids who may be struggling with a drug addiction.  Machkovech adds the reality of substance abuse in our community is that people are suffering and dying. Recovering addict Abby Klodowski adds talking about the problem is the only way to educate the public. She says having someone outside of your personal circle to talk to and who has the professional knowledge, can help you be the person you want to be after recovery. She explains it is important to educate children early and Therapist Jessica Geschke with Affiliated Clinical Services agrees. She says her goal is to get into the heads of children and stop them from picking up these drugs.  To help bring awareness to Dodge County or if you are interested in the Rise Together Movement you can visit their Facebook page or visit their website at www.weallrisetogether.org.

Sheriff: Domestic Abuse Calls For Service Increase

10/10/14 – Domestic abuse numbers are up sharply in Dodge County. That’s according to Sheriff Patricia Ninmann who said in the past nine months the Sheriff’s Department received nearly 400 calls regarding domestic abuse. Meanwhile, the department had received roughly 310 family disturbances in that same time period — averaging 700 calls for service for domestic violence. Ninmann adds this is a pressing issue and she says if individuals are unable to control their emotions it can be very serious. Ninmann explains the highest call volumes for domestic abuse were reported between the hours of 7pm and 10pm. Over 32-percent of all domestics were reported during this time frame. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department is also taking additional steps to help with prevention of domestic abuse. Ninmann explains it is important role to help find a solution for the community. She says as Sheriff she has partnered with the Domestic Abuse Response Team, PAVE and the Domestic Abuse Training Advisory committee through the Department of Justice. Ninmann adds it is important that the victims get the help that they need to overcome a traumatic incident such as domestic violence. She encourages those experiencing a domestic violence situation to call the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department or 911.

Detainee Suspected Of Ebola In Federal Custody

10/10/14 – A detainee in Kenosha has been turned over to federal authorities, after she was monitored for signs of the Ebola virus but did not have any.  U-S Customs and Border Patrol agents took the woman into custody at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, and sent her to the Kenosha County Jail early Wednesday for temporary detainment.  Earlier reports said the woman was in the process of being deported, but did not say why.  The immigration agency told sheriff’s officials that the woman was given a health screening — but deputies still sought guidance from the Centers for Disease Control.  They also contacted local hospitals, in the event that the woman showed any symptoms of the deadly Ebola.  None of that happened, and officials said the woman was in good health when she was turned over to federal officials around 5am Thursday.

Legion Continues To Enhance Facility

10/10/14 – The Beaver Dam American Legion chapter recently received a new addition.  A canopy that is 22-feet wide and 29-feet long with a 9-foot clearance has been added on to the south side of the building.  It allows for a more convenient drop-off of persons in inclement weather and is handicap accessible.  Former American Legion Commander, and current volunteer, Bob Kok says that the project has been in the works for quite some time.  The Legion initially wanted to build the canopy along with the main structure back in 2006 but did not have the necessary funds.  Bids were searched out earlier this year when the funding finally became available.  To access the canopy, people can enter the Legion property from the east side, drive thru to drop their loved one off at the door, and access the parking lot on the grounds’ west side.  In addition to the building project, the Legion is also involved in an upcoming community event.  It will be holding the Warrior Breakfast this Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Veteran’s Center in Beaver Dam.  Tickets for the event are eight dollars at the door or can be purchased ahead of time at Piggly Wiggly, Rechek’s Food Pride, or the Veteran’s Center for seven dollars.  Kok says that the proceeds from the event will go to a pair of causes, Church Health Services and the Wounded Warrior Project.  The menu will be all-you-can-eat and includes a variety of breakfast foods, beverages, and desserts.
