Dodge County Sitting On Large Road Salt Supply
1/22/16 – Salt supplies are high in Dodge County this winter. Highway Commissioner Brian Field says crews have gone out less than ten times due to the lack of snowfall. He says that is far less than most previous years at this time. The county came into the season with roughly 20,000 tons of salt, half of which belongs to the state for use on its highways. Only 2,000 tons of the over 17,000 contracted for has been received this winter. Dodge County has used less than 4,000 tons this season. With all of the county’s highway sheds full coming into this winter, Field says the county is considering temporary buildings or large tarps as storage options if there is more salt in the spring than the sheds can accommodate. Unless things change drastically, Field expects the largest leftover salt supply in his 30 years in the industry.
Unemployment Uptick In Wisconsin
1/22/16 – Unemployment is up a little in Wisconsin, but it remains well below the national norm. State officials report a seasonally-adjusted jobless rate of four-point-three percent for December — up one-tenth from November, but smaller than the U-S rate of five-percent for last month. A preliminary total of seven-thousand jobs were added in Wisconsin, but that’s based on a small survey of less than four-percent of state employers. Sixty-eight percent of eligible residents are in the state’s official workforce, almost five-and-a-half percent higher than the national participation rate. Ten-thousand more people joined the state workforce in December — and a record two-million-972 thousand Wisconsinites had jobs, a figure touted by Governor Scott Walker amid Democratic criticisms of slow job growth and large numbers of layoff notices.
