New Faces Ready To Shine For Markesan Football

The Markesan High School football will have a bit of re-tooling to do as they prepare for a new season and a new conference in 2020.  In 2019, John Dunlavy’s squad earned a playoff bid after a 4-2 finish in the Trailways Large and a 5-4 season that included a playoff spot.

The Hornets gradated seven players who received All-Trailways Large recognition last season including Offensive Lineman and Defensive Lineman of the Year Bryce Friday.  Markesan does return Honorable Mention all-league quarterback Hayden Quade.  He threw for 984 yards and eight TDs during his sophomore campaign and also ran for 455 yards and seven scores.

“No doubt we’ve lost a lot experience and a lot of good players so we will be asking a lot of new faces to step up into those shoes and we don’t expect to drop off or go anywhere in terms of what we’ve been success-wise.” Coach Dunlavy said.  “It’s just new opportunities for some new kids who are going to get a chance to shine in new roles for them and I think they are going to relish in those situations.”

With WIAA realigning to eight team football conferences this year, Markesan shifts from the Trailways Large to the new Eastern Suburban Conference.  The rest of the league includes; Cambridge, Clinton, Dodgeland, Marshall, Palmyra-Eagle, Pardeeville, and Waterloo.  Clinton has moved their football to the spring because of coronavirus.

“We definitely have a conference championship on our mind. That’s definitely a thought that we have.  We think we can compete at the top of our conference for that and we fully expect to be a challenge for anybody we play every week. “ Dunlavy said.

Travis Wilson of labeled Markesan as “A Team To Watch” in his preseason Division Six high school football rankings.

The Hornets will face off with Lourdes Academy in their season opener on September 25th in a game that will be played at St. Mary Catholic in Neenah.
